Tax cuts and government spending cuts seem to go together for some reason, and the threat of trade wars between the US and China is a worry for many people. At the same time, however, the US economy is looking good. With rising inflation, falling interest rates, and continued strength in housing, the country is looking very good. So what are we to make of this? Dag Naegle, author of "America Alone", has a pretty good idea. He writes, "Real gross domestic product growth has slowed to an average of just 2% a year over the last decade. Meanwhile, the federal government has dramatically increased its spending and deficits. To put it more bluntly, the US economy is not remotely healthy. Despite this, real GDP growth has averaged 2.3% annually, largely due to the massive deficits. In order to fund these deficits, government bond yields are down to levels that haven't been seen since the 1970s." This does not look like a healthy economy to me. "To be sure, the economy is slowly recovering from the Great Recession. House prices have started to rise, consumer confidence is up, the labor market is in full recovery, and consumers are being forced to spend again. This makes sense. The US economy is growing and, as far as we know, there are no imbalances in the world." And then the long-term trends come into play. Naegle writes, "The long-term problem is that the US has not been running budget surpluses. Instead, we have been running budget deficits year after year. Not only that, but the debts we have accumulated, as a percentage of our annual GDP, have doubled since 1981. In other words, we have just handed over more and more money to the already-wealthy. "The idea that 'we have plenty of money' is just a fairy tale. We don't. We have accumulated debts that cannot be repaid. Money is not like something to be thrown around. It is a medium of exchange, and unless you have something to exchange, you can't spend it." So how can we fix this? Naegle has a solution that will System Requirements For Microsoft Edge Chromium Blocker Toolkit: One functioning web browser (Google Chrome is recommended).
